Lecturing at European Psychotherapy Conference

Tatjana Dragovic and Kurt Andersen were invited to present at the European Neurolinguistic Psychotherapy Conference held at the Medical School in Zagreb, Croatia, on the 9th-11th of May 2003. At the conference they shared with colleagues from all over Europe their experience from the international trauma project they are involved in. They talked about the project, about the particular issues therapists are facing when working with war trauma victims (such as strong dissociation and/or anger) and new ways of helping the trauma sufferers let go of the past and focus on a compelling future.

The conference in general was a great success and our presentation on war traumas was very relevant for the location, where, as chairman of EANLPt Peter Schütz put is, "the war isn't over yet", as long as people who a decade ago belonged to the same country cannot travel freely to their neighboring countries.

Presenters at the conference from left to right: Bent Hansen (DK), Willem van der Horst (NL), Kurt Andersen (UK), Tatjana Dragovic (SLO), Jadranka Vasung (HR), Melita Stepancic (HR), Anne Wahlen Buri (CH), Catherine Tamisier (F), Mauro Scardovelli (I), Carolina Bozzo (I) and Peter Schütz (A).

Summary of our presentation

Lecturers: Kurt Andersen MSc (psych), psychotherapist, NLP trainer and NLP coach (UK) and Tatjana Dragovic, adult educator and NLP trainer and NLP coach (Slovenia)

Topic: Coping with trauma – a model for helping social and health professionals deal with sufferers of war traumas.

The model has been developed as an international project involving three countries: UK, Finland and Slovenia and has up to now resulted in a post-graduate training programme for social and health professionals in Oulu Polytechnic, Finland.

Kurt Andersen and Tatjana Dragovic shared their experiences from the International Trauma Project with the participants of the EANLPt conference, presenting the project and talking about the particular issues therapists are facing when working with war trauma victims (such as strong dissociation and/or anger) and about new ways of helping the trauma sufferers let go of the past and focus on a compelling future.

Content of the lecture/workshop:

  •          International project “Coping with trauma”: overview of the curriculum of the postgraduate programme of Oulu Polytechnic called “Crisis and Trauma work with refugees”, details on the experiential training of social and health professionals in trauma work.

  •          Presentation of models for work with trauma victims: prerequisites for the use of the models, components of the models, steps, the application of the models on war trauma victims and refugees.
